Cloches and Cold Frames
Cloches are the answer to portable garden plant
protection as they can be easily moved from plant
to plant to provide protection anywhere in the
garden. They are of particular importance in
Spring to protect tender flowers and young
vegetable plants from late frosts to give them
the earliest possible start.
Cold frames are slightly less portable than cloches but
more so than a greenhouse! Again they are very useful for hardening off young
plants in Spring prior to planting them out to their final position when the
frost has passed. Cold frames are also useful for providing protection from
the elements over winter and for rooting cuttings from your favourite shrubs.
In between a cloche and a cold frame is the mini-polytunnel
which can provide protection for a whole row of vegetables in the veg patch.
